The close-range combat art studied by Bruce Lee and designed by a woman. Practical self-defense, explosive striking, and sensitivity training — taught under the Golden Talon Kung Fu system.
What Is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a concept-based Chinese martial art specializing in close-range combat. It is the style studied by Bruce Lee and used as the basis for his famous Jeet Kune Do fighting system. Wing Chun is also the only formal martial arts system developed by a woman — Ng Mui, a Shaolin nun — making it an ideal style for women’s self-defense.
Wing Chun’s techniques were designed for close-range application, using economy of movement, simultaneous attack and defense, and sensitivity training to defeat larger, stronger opponents. Rather than relying on brute strength, Wing Chun uses structure, angles, and timing to redirect an attacker’s force against them.
At GMA, Wing Chun is taught under the Golden Talon Kung Fu system — a balanced blend of fundamentals, techniques, philosophies, and training methods from both Northern and Southern styles of Chinese martial arts, founded by Grandmaster W. Vardeman. Students receive a challenging workout, gain practical self-defense skills, and earn a well-rounded education in traditional martial arts.
Golden Talon Kung Fu — A comprehensive Chinese martial arts system developed for practicality. Golden Talon blends Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, and Kung Fu into a unified curriculum. Students train in both empty-hand combat and ancient weapons forms with real-world self-defense applications.

Wing Chun FAQ
Yes. Wing Chun was designed specifically for close-range street defense, not tournament competition. Its techniques address the most common attack scenarios — grabs, punches, pushes — and its emphasis on economy of movement and simultaneous attack-defense makes it highly practical. Bruce Lee built his entire fighting philosophy on Wing Chun’s foundation for a reason.
Wing Chun is the only formal martial art created by a woman — Ng Mui, a Shaolin nun. Its techniques don’t rely on strength or size advantages. Instead, Wing Chun uses structure, angles, and speed to redirect force. The close-range specialization is also practical because most real-world attacks on women happen at close distance — grabs, holds, and confined spaces.
Chi sao is Wing Chun’s signature partner training drill. Two practitioners maintain arm contact and practice reading each other’s movements through touch rather than sight. This develops extraordinary reflexes and the ability to sense and redirect an opponent’s force before they can fully execute their attack. It’s what makes Wing Chun unique among striking arts.
Bruce Lee’s martial arts foundation was Wing Chun, which he studied under Grandmaster Ip Man in Hong Kong. Wing Chun’s principles of directness, economy of motion, and simultaneous attack-defense became the core of Lee’s personal art, Jeet Kune Do. Lee called Wing Chun the most efficient striking system he had ever encountered.
Golden Talon Kung Fu is a comprehensive Chinese martial arts system founded by Sifu Vardeman that includes Wing Chun as a primary component, alongside Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, and Kung Fu. Rather than studying Wing Chun in isolation, students get the close-range skills of Wing Chun combined with the internal energy work of Tai Chi, the circular footwork of Bagua, and traditional Kung Fu conditioning. It’s a more complete approach to Chinese martial arts.
